Quinn

Quinn scowled when an email landed at 4.40 pm on Friday afternoon—a reminder that all employees were expected in the boardroom at 4.50 pm to ‘meet and greet’ the new director of sales. Today of all days! When her parents were arriving from Adelaide and she’d invited Mrs D over for dinner to meet them.

‘This better not take long,’ muttered Linc from the desk next to hers. ‘I’ve got plans tonight.’

‘What?’ Toby laughed. ‘Netflix without the chill?’

Linc gave him the finger.

Quinn rolled her eyes as she shut down her computer and grabbed her bag. She deserved a pay rise for having to put up with these clowns.

Leaving them to their bickering, she headed down the corridor towards the finance department. Deb’s cubicle was quieter than a library, all her colleagues bent over their computers, their fingers punching numbers into spreadsheets like it was an Olympic event. She bet the old blokes Deb worked with never discussed their sex lives—existent or otherwise—around her. The benefit of working with actual grown-ups.

‘Hey, girlfriend. It’s time,’ Quinn said, leaning over the top of her friend’s cubicle and tapping her watch.

Deb groaned. ‘Why couldn’t this have waited until Monday?’

‘That’s one of the many mysteries of the world. Along with why Shaun has employed yet another man to fill the position, when Sally deserved the promotion. So much for gender quotas and smashing the glass ceiling.’

She could see that Deb was as eager as Quinn to knock off and head home, although for entirely different reasons—Deb had a date with her hot vet to prep for. No matter how much she professed that she and Tristan were taking things slow, Quinn could see right through her. The way her eyes lit up and she got this goofy grin on her face whenever she talked about him told her everything she needed to know.

She was happy for Deb; she just hoped she didn’t have to wait till she was in her forties to find love.

‘So you think the rumour’s true?’ Deb asked. She hadn’t received the paperwork for the new employee yet, but that morning in the copy room Lexi had let slip to them that she’d overheard Shaun saying ‘him’ and ‘he’ when talking to his PA about the recruit. Nothing remained secret for long at The Energy Co.

‘Of that I have no doubt.’ Quinn threw her hands up in the air. She could only imagine how poor Sally must be feeling right now. ‘But you know Shaun’s a man’s man. Powerful women terrify him. Come on, the sooner we get to the boardroom, the sooner it will be over.’

‘I’ve just got to send one email and I’ll be there. Save me a seat.’

‘You got it, girlfriend.’ Quinn gave Deb a thumbs-up, then hurried back the way she’d come.

Her colleagues were already streaming into the room by the time she got there, but she managed to nab two chairs. Much to Linc’s annoyance, she plopped her bag on the one next to her and refused to let him or anyone else sit down.
